“It was what I was waiting for. A perfume like nothing else. A woman’s perfume, with the scent of a woman.” – Coco Chanel

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel founded the House of Chanel in 1910.  They design house was better known for their elegant fashions and stylish hats.  The women’s suit became a staple in the line by 1954.

Coco Chanel was constantly looking for a feminine fragrance.  She felt insulted by the foul smell of some of the women at the time.  Other designers had created and launched fragrances, but she felt that they didn’t last and didn’t cover up odors.  In 1921 Chanel got together with perfumer Ernest Beaux, and had him create a fragrance for her.  He came to her with a few samples, numbered 1 through 5, and another set numbered 20-24.  Chanel instantly fell in love with the 5th formula in the line up and hence the perfume Chanel No.5 came to life.  It is rumored, that the formula was an error by Beaux’s assistant, who accidentally added too much aldehydes (aldehydes were thought to be too strong to be used on perfumes before No 5 came out).  So Chanel took the formula out with her to lunch, and started spraying the fragrance around.  The scent literally stopped women in their tracks, and asked to find out what it was.  Chanel felt that this perfume would be an instant success and she was not mistaken.  Chanel No.5 is one of the worlds best selling perfumes to present day.

Along with Beaux’s help, the House of Chanel went on to create many more fragrances, such as Chanel no 22, Bois Del iles and Gardenia.  In 1955 their first men’s fragrance was launched simply called Chanel Pour Monsieur, followed by Chanel No. 19 for women.

Years after the death of Coco Chanel in 1971, the fashion house went on to launch other perfumes, such as Cristalle in 1974, Antaeus for men in 1981, Coco Pour Femme in 1984, Egoiste for men in 1990 followed by Platinum Egoiste in 1993, Allure for women in 1996 and for men in 1998.  Years later Coco Mademoiselle was created in 2001 and Chance in 2002.
