Pierre Francois Pascal Guerlain opened his first shop in Paris where he designed and created personalized scents for each of his clients.  After building a great reputation for himself, he became the official fragrance designer for the Queen of Belgium in 1853, when he produced l’Eau de Cologne Impériale.  Fracios died in 1864 and and his two sons took over.  Thus beginning a long line of  fragrances. In 1884, Fleur D’Itale, Skine in 1885 and Rococo In 1887.  In 1889 Jicky was introduced in honor of their father Francois.

Years later the company was handed down to their sons and nephews, and they created many fragrances that are still popular today.  Among some of their most famous ones, was Shalimar created in 1925 which became their flagship fragrance.  It was rumored that they took the frragrance Jicky and added vanilla, thus becoming one of the most famous fragrances of all time.

The fourth generation of Guerlain created the famous Vetiver for men in 1959 and Habit Rouge in 1965 by Jean Paul Guerlain.  He went on to create Chamade in 1969, Jardins de Bagatelle in 1983 and Samsara in 1989. Years later Jean Paul retired after being terminated for some racist remarks he had made regarding his inspiration for Samsara.

In 1994, the company was bought by Moet Hennessy Luis Vuitton, aka LVMH, and they instantly introduced Champs-Elysees for women.  Most were not happy with this buy out, as they felt that it cheapened the fashion house’s legacy.  House of Guerlain, under the new ownership, went on to create many fragrances, such as the re-introduction of Shalimar…Shalimar Light in 2003, L’Instant de Guerlain in 2004, and Insolence in 2006.
